I would venture-to-bargain that man, as a "cave dweller", often-times showed a prospective mate that he was more capable of providing by the act of sport killing. A a demonstration of skill or "guts" even if food was not necessary.

In the 1800s southern and central European hunters often pursued game only for a trophy, usually the head or pelt of an animal, to be displayed as a sign of prowess. The rest of the animal was often wasted.

WAM is probably right about the ancient guy showing off for his winsome cavewoman, but the couple probably ate whatever the guy speared. Why waste it? However, we do have some illustrations of hunting for sport that date back some thousands of years. The site below includes a relief belonging to a series depicting a royal lion hunt among the Assyrians and dated to about 645 BCE. As the site notes, even earlier illustrations of such hunts go back to the 4th millennium BCE.
