Can anyone explain Brett Favre's name? He says that it's pronounced Farve, but how can that be? The V is before the R. Can someone explain?

    Question #71876. Asked by Ilona_Ritter. (Oct 29 06 5:24 PM)

Surnames, and sometimes first names, of non-Anglo Saxon origin are famously mangled in the U.S. (and elsewhere, if the truth be known). They may be hard to pronounce in English, so Americans simply use the pronunciation that seems easiest. Over time, I imagine, the Favre family found that everyone tended to transpose the "r" and the "v" and simply went with the flow.
