What is suspended animation? They mentioned it on Gilmore Girls and South Park so I was wondering what it is.

Suspended animation is the slowing of life processes by external means without termination. Breathing, heartbeat, and other involuntary functions may still occur, but they can only be detected by artificial means. Extreme cold is used to precipitate the slowing of an individual's functions; use of this process has led to the developing science of cryonics. Outside of science fiction, the technique has never been applied to humans for more than a few hours.

Suspended animation is the slowing of respiration and heartbeat and life functions through artificial means. It was a tool that science fiction authors had used throughout the ages. They used it so that the characters could survive a long space voyage before the advent of hyperdrive or warp speed. 2001 A Space Odyssey showed crewmembers in suspended animation. In the Star Trek episode Space Seed, Kahn and his people were in suspended animation.
