I don't know if he did or not, but why might it have been somewhat appropriate for a certain jazz band leader to wear a trilby hat, and what possible connection is there with Tonto?

Could one of these people be your unknown band leader?
I'm guessing you are referring to Tonto from Lone Rangers? I do see how there could be a connection involved, but perhaps you can find it out from here. If I generate any more information or thoughts, I'll post once more.

That's the right Tonto, but the musician I'm looking for is definitely jazz - or rather, was.. The actual hat wearing is unknown - he might or might not. Doesn't matter - the trilby would be sort of appropriate for him if he did. There could also be a connection to what I believe is Canada's favourite cigarette... (By the way, this is one of those questions where the asker does know the answer rather than being a seeker of info. But thanks for trying to help me, anyway!))

Gil Evans' 1973 album was entitled "Svengali," which happened to be an anagram of his name. There's your trilby connection.
Both Evans and Jay Silverheels, who played Tonto, were born in 1912. That's the best I can do on that.

Nice one Frankie, but there is another connection between Gil Evans and Tonto. Rather a bad joke, but not mine.... (I didn't know those two were both born in the same year, having gone slightly more directly at this!)
