    Frankie will probably have more insight to this than I, but it was to represent the 600 Swiss Guards whom died during the French Revolution.

    Bertel Thorvaldsen was the creator.

    Well, actually, there isn't much more to be said about Thorvaldsen and the Lion Monument -- it's a very straightforward commemorative piece -- but here's a rather better picture of it:
