An important, if somewhat disturbing, work of American art that was the subject of one of my previous questions is suddenly in danger of being sold away from the city that was its creator's home and that has been its location for over a century. City residents and officials are taking steps to prevent the sale. What is this work, where is it, and who is trying to buy it?

The painting is located in an obscure place on the campus so that less than 500 people a year see it and the school is in great need of the money.

And the silver mace to you, peasy! Glad you liked the first question.
Anyone who wants to see the painting can, star_gazer. I don't doubt Jefferson's need for the money, but I'm hoping that the Philadelphia community can come up with a way to keep the painting in the city in which it was created and first exhibited.
Mayor Street, a scrappy guy if ever there was one, is threatening to invoke an obscure "historic object" clause in the city's historic preservation code. It's been used before, and fairly recently.
