How many Marx brothers constituted the famous Marx Brothers comedy team?

    Question #72630. Asked by nibbles0011.

Four in the films, but five altogether. Groucho, Harpo and Chico were the three zany ones. Zeppo was the straight romantic lead one. And then there was Gummo. Gummo? Who he? He was the first of them to be on stage, and performed with Groucho and Harpo (and Mabel O'Donnell) in The Four Nightingales, but quit show business before the Marx Brothers became really famous. But he was a brother of the Marx Brothers.... http://www.marx-brothers.org/index.htm

I've seen films with Zeppo in. You might easily miss that he was one of the brothers, as he looked the part of 'leading man' rather than playing the comic like the three zanies. In fact, he was playing a sort of skit on the goody-goody leading men of the day. He was in eight films, including Animal Crackers, Horse Feathers and Duck Soup. Groucho, Chico and Harpo were in those three as well, so the four did appear together. (Probably they all were in all of Zeppo's eight films. I haven't checked that.) Gummo was purely a stage performer, and as I said, quit before they really took off. He played the sort of role played by Zeppo.
