It's not really so much who as what. It wasn't Krishna himself, but rather a rather oversized chariot that is dragged by 4000 people at Puti in Orissa State. If you think Western juggernauts are big, how about 35 feet square and 45 feet high, with 16 seven foot wheels? The name of the god involved is Jagganath (Jagganatha) the Lord of the World. Hindu gods are even more complicated than the Christian Trinity and Mary in terms of differing titles and identities. Jagganath(a) is an aspect of Krishna whose cult is centred in Puri. The current image dates only from 1977, having lasted longer than its predecessor from 1969. (What do they do with the old ones?) http://www.indiantemples.com/Orissa/puri.html
Incidentally, there are three'cars' in the procession, Jagganath's, and those of his sister Subhadra and brother Balbhadra. Subhadra's chariot is smaller. The throwing of themselves under the wheels is denied by some sources, but referred to in http://www.odissi.com/orissa/jagannath.htm as happening in 'ancient days'.
