Lady Jane Grey was a great-niece of Henry VIII and a claimant to the throne. Edward named her his heir. She ascended to the throne on Edwards death in 1553 and reigned for 9 days. Although recognised by the Royal Council the people rallied to Mary, Henry's daughter with Catherine of Aragon who had been declared illegitimate. Both Jane and her husband were executed in 1554.
