Probably in jest..."She was the daughter of a British officer, but when she and James were stationed in France, she adopted the mannerisms of the French upper classes, and as First Lady established a regal protocol for social events at the White House --"Queen Elizabeth," their political enemies called her.

Well, she was, by all accounts, rather snobbish and reclusive, but please. The poor woman was an epileptic, a serious social problem in the 18th century.
Then again, she and James might have overdone their stay in Paris. The Revolution didn't make much of an impression:
