A current theory is that Dimebag Darrells killer, Nathan Gale, beleived that he had stolen a song from him. As he was killed by police himself at the scene, we probably will never know.

This is what Gene Simmons had to say:
Commenting more generally on the shooting and the kind of risks artists face when performing live, Simmons continued: "You know people often forget that the word "fan" actually comes from the word "fanatical". Most people are very nice. Most people respect your privacy. But here's no secret, most celebrities check into hotels under pseudonyms and the reason is not because I don't love the fans but because you've got to be able to keep everybody at arm's length because every once in a while you're going to get a nut job. The only justice, as far as I'm concerned, is that this nut case is no longer around to do this to anybody else".

Gale's motive for the killings may never be known, though some witnesses state that he shouted something about the breakup of Pantera before he started shooting. Those who knew him claim that he was a huge fan of Pantera (because of this, his motive for the killings could have been the fact the band broke up three years previously), and that he often showed signs of mental instability. According to interviews with his friends, he sometimes claimed that Pantera was stealing songs that he had written.

Odd that right after I saw this I turned the TV on and there was a documentary about Pantera and near the end they showed video footage of the actual moment Nathan Gale got on the stage and started shooting until over three minutes later when the officer shot and killed him...at the end they said they could only speculate on the motive but they assume Gale was upset over the breakup of Pantera.
