The Australian Capital Territory, after having rejected the notion twice in a referendum, became self-governing in 1989. Many of its citizens, including some who stood as candidates, did not take it seriously, and the result was a ballot-paper which was almost one metre long. Just how many candidates stood for this election?

Yep, it was. What was interesting though was the name of the registered parties. We had the Sun-ripened Warm Tomato party, The Abolish Self-Government Party, The Party!Party!Party! and the No Self=Government Party. The really sad thing was that several people were elected from the Abolish SG Party and the No SG Party, and of course when they got in they proceeded to act like any other politician (draw your own conclusions!) It took 2 more elections before we got rid of all of them.
