Which mathematical relationship had the 300th anniversary of its name this year (2006), and who was responsible?

    Question #72867. Asked by Baloo55th. (Dec 02 06 4:16 PM)

I know it is Pi -- Often William Jones' book A New Introduction to Mathematics from 1706 is cited as the first text where the Greek letter ð was used for this constant, but this notation became particularly popular after Leonhard Euler adopted it some years later (cf History of ð).

Nice one. William Jones was keen on giving things short names - and pi is certainly shorter than Ludolph's Constant which was another name for it. I love that little wheel thing at the top corner of your site...

The wheel is my gift to you because I forgot the 55 in your name...

For some unknown reason, the Greek letter pi on the site Zbeck quoted has transformed itself into an eth when being transferred to this place. Well, it has on my display. Not that I'm worrying about it really.

I didn't realise pi had a relationship. I thought it was just a lonely constant.
