What is the most common kind of coffee (eg, cappucino, latte, etc.)?

    Question #72982. Asked by Tolkien_Luvr. (Dec 06 06 1:27 PM)

Instant. In the vast majority of houses in Western civilisation you will find a jar of someone's instant coffee. Even in mine, and I much prefer chocolate or lemon tea. Or hot Vimto.

I'm not finding anything out there, however, I think most coffee drinkers usually have a ready supply of regular old coffee grounds.

There are different 'kinds' of coffee classifications (for example, adhering to the plant itself- Arabica and Robusta) and there are different 'types' of ways of preparing it.

The question poster has given an example that he/she is after the most common type of 'ordered' prepared coffee drinks.

Coffee is the bean that when roasted and ground make what you know as coffee. There are many varieties of beans (locations of where they are grown), and roasting methods that provide the different flavors of brewed coffee. The finer the grind changes the type of coffee that you drink from brewed coffee (a coarse grind) to expresso (used in cappucino), to Turkish and Greek Coffees (finer grinds).

That being said, for most mass market coffees sold in supermarkets and instant coffees, the typical bean that they use is Columbian. In your typical restaurants my bet is that they serve Columbian coffee.

In a coffee house, most serve a Columbian and some other bean/roast combination as an alternative, along with a decaffinated coffee.

Back to what the question asks--

I can only offer statistics based on my own business. The cappuccino trumps over selections of lattes, espressos, macchiatos, or Viennas with almost a 40% lead in orders in my restaurant, based on evening dining, which surprises even me.

Obviously the answer is area, age, and time (of the day) dependant. In my experience, the latte drinkers are middle aged women, the espressos are male orientated, the cappuccinos are usually ordered by the younger set, and the affogatos by the teens. Short espressos are mainly ordered by foreigners of ethnic backrounds, or by males of mid-thirties trying to impress a woman. ;)
