    Where did purple dye first come from?

    		The purple dye came from species of Murex shells; only small quantities could be obtained, therefore it was very precious, so only the rich could afford it.

    		The colour derived from the murex shells wasn't very much like the colour we call purple now. It was (probably - they're not 100% certain of the shade) a rich red with just enough blue to stop it being really red.
