What happens to real Christmas trees after Christmas?

    Question #73277. Asked by rainbowgirl44. (Dec 13 06 11:28 AM)

If the trees still have the roots balled at the bottom, some people may replant the tree in their yard. However, most Christmas trees are without roots, so people usually just dispose of them. Some cities have dropoff areas for old Christmas trees. My family has always just taken our old tree out to the woods in our backyard and disposed of it there.

    Christmas Tree Disposal - Recycling

In a national (USA) survey, 69% of consumers who used a Real Christmas Tree said they recycled it afterwards. Christmas Trees are recycled for five main types of use:

chipping (chippings are used for mulch and making paths)
    lake and river shoreline stabilization
    river sedimentation management
    beachfront erosion prevention
    fish habitats
In the UK (in 2002) more than three-quarters of a million trees were recycled, but there is significant room for improvement as we buy more than six million Christmas trees each year.

Real trees are a renewable, recyclable resource, and Real Trees are planted to be harvested just as wheat and barley are cultivated for a harvest. For each Real Christmas Tree harvested, up to three new seedlings are planted in its place, depending on farm size and current field rotation. Young trees in their rapid growth years have a high rate of photosynthesis and thus produce more oxygen than older trees.

They've been recycling Christmas trees in my area for many years. Coastal defences sometimes, chipping mostly.

I bought a little tree about 4 feet high around 1970 and then planted it after christmas. About 20 years later we had it removed after it was the height of the house. Be careful, they grow very quickly and around 100 feet so don't plant them unless you've got room for a very large tree in the not so distant future.

Usually people either put it in their garden, or they put it by the streets, where local people pick it up an burn all of their collected trees.
