Can cats learn tricks?

Yes! A couple years ago I saw an act on one of those late night shows (Jay Leno or Conan O'Brien, I don't remember which.) It was very much like your typical dog act, except with cats! I was very surprised, because I didn't think cats could learn this kind of thing. Wish I had more concrete data to back this up other than my memory, sorry. However, another 'Yes' answer would be all those lion and tiger acts in the circuses, Siegfried and Roy, etc. Those are cats! Oct 26 00, 5:10 AM

Yes! It is true. Many cats are trainable, as evidence by the number of movies, and television shows that we see them in, most recently 'Meet The Parents'. Typically they are trained via positive reinforcement and pavlovian techniques, giving them tiny bits of a really good treat, and clicking a little 'clicker' at the same time the wanted trick is performed. This way, the cat performs an action, hears the 'clicker' (lets them know they did what the trainer wanted)and then the kitty will receive a little treat! If a computer can be taught to learn, and thus taught to win, can it too be taught to lose, or would it shut down because of not understanding the fact that it has the ability to learn to lose?
