Which country's flag once had its charge facing the other way?

Question #73508. Asked by peasypod. (Dec 19 06 4:44 PM)

Egypt's flag changed in 1984 - the Eagle of Saladin replaced the Hawk of Qureish. The Eagle faces left, while the Hawk faced right.

In Bolivia, the horse on the flag has been turned around so that instead of running to the right, it is running to the left...CHARGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you ask me...it looks like a llama and NOT a horse.

And as I was about to say, the charge on the Bolivian flag is the coat of arms and it is indeed a llama.

No, this is not the one I had in mind as I haven't found any other reference to the Bolivian 'horse' apart from someone blogging on that site. ;)

Okay...with only three countries remaining...how about Venezuela having changed their white horsey from running right to left?

Touche zbee, and as I suspected there could be a possibility of another flag being capable of being a technically correct answer. But, this wasn't the one I had in mind so if you aren't exhausted enough already, how about you get away from horses for a bit and think of something else?

Oh, and ok, you can have half a Golden Flag Pole...

Looks like the eagle on the Mexican flag now faces the other way...

I'm learning a lot about flags today. Thanks.

Very good effort boypipe, and closer geographically, too. But also not the one in my hip pocket. So, you can have the other half of the Golden Flag Pole, and keep looking for the 'birds'.

    Thanks for the clue.

Before 1988 the parrot on the flag of Dominica faced the other way!

A Parrot??????????????????????????????? I thought it was a horse.

No, it's definitely a Parrot. We can call it a horse if it will make you feel better.

    Hallelujah BoyPipe!

Yes, the Dominican Sisserou Parrot is exactly what I was after, so the Golden Banana goes to you. Well done.

Zbee, are you wearing your glasses today?

Thank you. It WOULD make me feel better if we called it a horse...a purple horse. No, I do not have my glasses on today. They broke when I hit my head with a hammer.

All flags face the other way when the wind changes, which is why the ends are referred to as 'hoist' and 'fly' rather than left and right.

Technically speaking, the reverse image is obviously shown on a flag being flown, but irrespective of that, the charge of a flag will always be known to reside in its usual place.

The Union Jack on my flag will always be in the top left hand corner and no matter how many tequilas I may slam, it won't confuse me seeing it upside down or inside out. ;)
