Although Walt was an obviously bright child -- his long hours delivering newspapers ensured that he was drowsy much of the time in school -- in seventh grade he was fortunate enough to be taught by Daisy A. Beck. An outstanding teacher with a compassionate approach for young Walt, she encouraged him in his artwork, all the while prodding him to keep up with his more traditional studies.
