When robboy asked this question (#49231), Maggie G5 answered it with the trap-shooting event in the 1900 Paris Olympics -- the first and only time live pigeons were used.
According to David Wallechinsky's "Complete Book of the Summer Olympics" (2004), p. 976, the gold medal winner in Paris in this competition was Roger de Barberin. Oddly, since he includes lots of other pieces of Olympics trivia, Wallechinsky doesn't say that live pigeons were used. Today, the trap event involves clay saucers.
