    Which ancient period was named after its high coccolithophore population? I think it might be the Cretaceous, from craie, meaning chalk.

    And I agree with you, to a degree... The period was called after the chalk, as you say, but the chalk was largely made up of coccolithophores. Just pause for a moment and think. Look at a picture of the Downs in the south of England (or the chalklands over the water in Normandy, even). A coccolithophore can only be seen by using a microscope. There are beds of chalk made from their microscopic calcite plates that are 100 metres thick. And they extend for miles. That's a heck of a lof of coccolithophores.
