Up to a point. Once you are aware you're dreaming you can then manipulate the surroundings but only in a limited way. Of course the more you practice the more you'll be able to influence. Also if you want to programme yourself before you sleep for a particular dream it can also be done if persistent, though practically it really isn't that necessary to do either as dreams fulfil their functions (many unknown) without help.

You often can influence your dreams by giving yourself pre-sleep suggestions. Another method of influencing dreams is called lucid dreaming, in which you are aware you are dreaming while still asleep and in the dream. Sometimes people experience this type of dreaming spontaneously. It is often possible to learn how to increase lucid dreaming, and thereby increase your capacity to affect the course of the dream events as they unfold. Some things are easier than others to control, and indeed complete control is probably never possible. Some professional dream workers question the advisability of trying to control the dream, and encourage learning to enjoy and understand it instead.

Carlos Castaneda wrote a popular series of mystic books that focus on dream control.
Although not made clear by the author, the books appear to be fictional.

Where dreams are concerned, I've found that pre-sleep suggestions are useless and that I can manipulate the surroundings only as I'm just on the verge of waking up -- or between sleep and full consciousness. For the most part, I'm quite happy to let my subconscious roam where it will. More interesting that way.

Once I realise I am dreaming I can with effort control my dreams. The way to realise you are dreaming is to read a sign which has more than five letters on it. Look away and then look back again. If you are awake, the sign will still say the same thing. If you are dreaming, the sign will have changed, because the part of your brain which controls reading is not operating during dreams.
I've tried it and it works.

Absolutely. It does take practice. I have often not liked the road on which my dream was traveling and either changed it or awoke with the sense of having awakened on demand.
This does not occur frequently.

If you think about cartain people, events, or if you watch or read something, you may affect what you dream about.
