Can you name the small instrument invented in the 1860s which gave drawings the illusion of movement when consecutive drawings were placed on a strip of paper, which was then placed inside a drum on which slots had been cut? When one spun the drum and looked through the slots, one got the impression that the characters in the drawings were moving.

The phenakistoscope (also spelled phenakistiscope) was an early animation device, the predecessor to the zoetrope. It was invented in 1831 simultaneously by the Belgian Joseph Plateau and the Austrian Simon von Stampfer.

Zbeck, Actually the zoetrope is what I was specifically asking for but you were as close as you could possibly get by naming what came before it and then icluding the zoetrope in the answer too.

zoetrope and the things used to make the animation are called animation cells short for celluloids.
