The US flag has changed 27 times since the original thirteen were in a circular pattern.
The flag had 48 stars for the longest time, from July 4, 1912, until July 4, 1959, for a span of 47 years. Provided no more states enter into the Union, on July 4, 2007, we will have 48 and 50 tied for the longest, since the current flag has been flown since July 4, 1960.

48 Arizona, New Mexico July 4, 1912–July 3, 1959 47
(564 months)
49 Alaska July 4, 1959–July 3, 1960 1
(12 months)
50 Hawaii July 4, 1960–Present 46
The 48 star version was used the longest for 47 years, however the 50 star version will over take that within the next year or so.
