    Callimachus was correct- but not to Homer- it was to Apollonius of Rhodes' "Argonautica" http://www.chlt.org/sandbox/perseus/mooney/page.0.a.php

    Except that the supposed "quarrel" between Callimachus and Apollonius is widely considered to be a myth.

    The notion of competition between writers, artists, an other major cultural figures of the past became quite popular among late-19th and early 20th-century scholars. It was an excellent way to order cultural history and to teach it to students.
