Why does Ukraine have two currencies, karbovanets and hryvnia?

Question #74697. Asked by author. (Jan 18 07 5:14 PM)

It doesn't, really. The hryvnia is the official currency, and bears the same name as the short-lived currency of the Ukraine whan it was independent in 1918. The karbovanets was a sort of coupon currency during the changeover from the Soviet rouble to the new currency. From 1997, the hryvnia became the only official currency in the Ukraine. http://www.uazone.net/Hryvnia/
