A certain writer, long resident in Paris, once attempted to explain a U.S. holiday to the French. In the process, he narrated (in an idiosyncratic manner) a romantic tale fabricated by a famous poet and provided an interesting French translation for the name of one of the historical characters involved. Who was the writer, what was the holiday, and what was the amusing translation?

The inimitable Art Buchwald was the writer, Thanksgiving was the holiday and Kilometres Deboutish (the metric Miles Standish) the character. This can be found in today's obituary in the New York Times.

That's Buchwald's obituary, of course.
