It had been only a few short decades since a Portuguese Jew, Abraham Vasquez, figured out how to calculate latitude when one is south of the Equator. His discoveries were published first in Hebrew and his son shared the secret with the Portuguese government. Columbus did not know how to calculate southern latitudes when he made his famous voyage across the Atlantic. But Vasco da Gama did, as did Magellan.
