It is thought to have many direct ancestors, one from predynastic and Ancient Egypt, another from Ancient Rome involving a certain Byzantine Emperor who changed his name in order to gain acceptance to his peers. Archeaologists have found evidence of its existance 5000 years ago in a place that natives would say was once very hot. What is it, who was the emperor and what, very recently, was found at that same excavation site?

I'm fairly certain that this is backgammon, which I used to play rather a lot. The emperor would be Zeno, and the site is the "Burnt City" in Iran, where in December, the world's oldest artificial eyeball (!) was discovered.

Originating in the Middle East, it once featured flesh from a castrated bird, scented water and 'milk' from a fruit that was found in the tomb of an Ancient King. Around 400 years ago the recipe changed to how it is known today and its name (although quite different) still is descriptive of its appearance. What is it, and whose collection of prose does it feature in?
