    The first known written account of a parachute concept is found in da Vinci's notebooks (c l495).

    There is some reason to believe that Arabs and the Chinese were experimenting with parachutes well before the 15th century. This site even offers a couple of 9th-century names, though they may not be reliable. There is also an anonymous manuscript discussing parachutes that seems to precede Leonardo's. Scroll down to "History":
