Ancient sources claim that an expedition led by Hanno the Navigator sailed south along the Atlantic coast of Africa and got as far as the Gulf of Guinea. I'm not coming up with archaeological evidence for that, but it doesn't seem a major stretch to believe this could have happened.
On the other hand, Herodotus said that they managed to circumnavigate Africa. Of course, he said a lot of unbelievable things.
