When were the last rumble seats available on cars?

    Question #75491. Asked by star_gazer. (Feb 05 07 10:02 PM)

They were last available on Plymouth's in 1939.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rumble_seat they were gone by WWII, having begun to become obsolete in the mid-30's.

Someone might find a more definitive answer.

Apparently Oldsmobile's last rumble seat was in 1936.

Pierce Arrow folded in 1938 and still had them.

Packard offered them in 1937. http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/allender/antcars.htm

Ford still made them in 1939. Here's a story and a picture. http://www.phillyburbs.com/pb-dyn/news/250-10152003-178283.html

Bottom line: you can't ride in a rumble seat at high speed. When cars got faster, no more rumble seats.

That's all on this subject for me, folks!

Around 1952. The Triumph 1800 (later fitted with a 2 litre engine) came out in 1946. It was a three seater sports car with what we over here call a dickey seat in addition. The disastrous TR1 came out in 1952 (replaced a year later by the successful TR2), so 1952 will be when this elegant motor went out. According to this site, http://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au/lost_marques_triumph.htm this was the last car manufactured with a dickey seat. lovely, they were. I remember when I was very very small being very impressed with the one owned by the fellow next door. I never got to ride in the dickey seat, though.
