The first European to experience the joys of a Cuban cigar seems to be Lt. Rodrigo de Jerez, whom Columbus sent inland to explore, accompanied by a Catholic priest to translate into Chinese. An adventurous sort, Rodrigo tried what the Indians offered, discovered that he liked cigars, took samples of both Indians and tobacco home to Spain, and enjoyed strolling the avenue, puffing away. Alas, for Rodrigo, the Spanish Inquisition decreed that anyone who could blow smoke out his nose must be in league with the devil, and in to the slammer he went for more than a year...and you thought modern anti-cigar laws were tough!.
