Do you need a TV licence in the UK to watch ITV, Channel 4 and Five?

Question #75657. Asked by crazycube. (Feb 09 07 6:15 AM)

Yes (assuming that you're resident in the UK)

    See the TV Licensing website:

"You need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, set-top boxes, video or DVD recorders, computers or mobile phones to watch or record TV programmes as they are being shown on TV."

This applies even though the licence fee is used only to fund the BBC.

The relevant law is the Communication Act 2003.

You don't need a licence for a TV if it's only used for connecting to a video player used for playing pre-recorded videos, or if it's used for connecting to something like an old BBC computer. (I just had a visit from the TV licensing people 'cos I haven't got a licence. I showed him my set. It's got four buttons - one for BBC1, one for BBC2, one for ITV and a SPARE ONE! It hasn't got a plug on it, though. Doesn't work, anyway.)
