What is the origin of the saying, "Kiss me, I'm Irish"?

Question #75700. Asked by annaphillips. (Feb 10 07 3:36 PM)

It is a reference to the Blarney Stone. Kissing the Blarney stone brings you good luck so if you can't kiss the stone the next best chance of getting good luck is "kissing an irish person."

My friend toured Ireland and I asked him if he had kissed the famous Blarney Stone he had not because of being warned of unfriendly locals who would pee on it!

A widely-known urban legend asserts that locals and/or employees at Blarney Castle urinate on the Stone outside of opening hours, in order to have a laugh at the tourists' expense.
