For four years Athena was Nightingale’s much-loved pet, carried in her pocket. It is even said that on the eve of her departure for the Crimea, Athena died of a broken heart.

Actually it was Florence's heart which was broken...

While preparing for departure to the Crimea for war nursing duties, Florence, placed the owl in the attic of her residence thinking she would be safe while providing her a means for food while ridding the space of mice. Alas...the trained and domesticated avery was literally forgotten then found dead due to her inability to function without her mistress. Broken hearted, Florence delayed her departure and arranged for the services of a taxidermist.

What kind of animal did Florence Nightingale often carry around in her pocket?

It is said to have been invented by, and named after, a 17th-century Italian as a kind of life-insurance plan, though it has been banned in various countries out of fear that it might encourage murder among the participants. In the late 19th and the mid-20th centuries, it became the subject of two novels, the first by a very famous author and the second involving a scheme established in honor of a famous victory and following the beneficiaries over the course of many years. What is this thing, after whom was it named, and who wrote the two novels?
