Feeding babies via the bottle is also a relatively new custom, and in Europe of the 19th century every baby was breastfed.

Now we know why Johnny couldn't read in the middle of the 20th century. Rudolf Flesch thought differently.

How can they tell? There is no control possible, and you certainly can't rerun and try again. I would dispute that every baby was breast-fed, but bottle feeding didn't take off until the 20th century. Having said that, even in Greek legend there are references to non-maternal feeding - Zeus being a case in point - but maintaining hygiene was difficult. As hygiene wasn't highly regarded anyway, this didn't make much difference, but it was making the teat that caused the most trouble. The first rubber one was patented in the mid 19th C. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby_bottle But anyway, I still dispute the validity of the statistic quoted.
