    		Terry testifies publicly and becomes a pariah on the docks but, in the end, triumphs over Johnny Friendly after a dramatic fight with him on the docks that reunifies the workers.

    		That is all true, but if you read my question closely it asks for the "one event" that caused Terry to give the brave testimony proving to everyone that he is not just "a bum".

    What was that one crucial event?

    		The murder of his brother, Charlie.

    		That's a prize commode for your Jane, after his brother was murdered he wanted to fight Johnny Friendly with a gun but the good priest talks him out of this and convinces him that to really hurt Friendly he must testify.
