    Why in American Urban culture are the police often referred to as Five-O?

    		The closest I can get is to spoof Hawaii Five-O, which was an American television series that starred Jack Lord and James MacArthur as detectives for a fictional Hawaii state police department.

    		5-0 (Hawaii Five-0), 12 (Adam 12), both slang for Police, come from the TV shows that were popular in the 1960's and early 1970's.

    The Five-0 in the name comes from Hawaii being the Fiftieth State to join the Union!
