A certain lady whose identity is unimportant to this question is the daughter of a former Harvard dean. She found the physical atmosphere of their National Register house with its dark brown woodwork and Victorian decor, as well as the intellectual atmosphere of their social circle, to be oppressive, intimidating, hypocritical, and meaningless.
Can you furnish the first line of a poem by a well-known American poet that aptly conveys her sense of frustration with that lifestyle?

That's good, but not the one I have in mind.
I'm looking for the first line of a poem that entirely deals with this subject. That's a third huge hint, after one in my statement and another in the actual question.

Scratch that...the whole poem does not deal entirely with the subject.

Right, scratch that one, but the first line does include a gender word.
