This Egyptian lady, now venerated by a certain religion, underwent unique oral tortures that have made her the patron saint of a certain modern profession. Not a few offices practicing this profession display interesting, but possibly disturbing to patrons, posters of the lady on ther walls. Who was she, and can you provide an illustration of her?

Might this poor lassie be Saint Apollonia, patron saint of dentistry?

It might be, peasy. While visiting a new dentist today, I commented that he didn't have any Saint Apollonia pictures on his walls -- all my previous dentists did.

He said, "Who?" I am now committed to educating him on the subject.

And you get a set of silver pincers.

You don't want to know what MY dentist has a picture of on his ceiling....but then, he has the same warped sense of humour as I do. ;)

So? What is on the ceiling. I am on the edge of my seat awaiting the warp-ed-ness that I would appreciate and understand. I too, like you Ms. Peasey, are a bit wacky!

Stay on the edge of your seat. I can't reveal it here...

My turn to dust off an old question, one of particular interest to me because my next-door neighbor is the great-niece of the lady doctor in question. Question #76547. queproblema asks: A young woman was a pioneer in a profession up until then deemed the exclusive domain of men. Later in her career she was influential in the passage of a act named for a senator from Alabama that permitted women in that newly opened profession to be commissioned as officers in the armed services. Who starred in the movie that told, in Hollywood's normal garbled fashion, her story? (McGruff, maybe you can wait to delete the original post since there was a helpful response. Or they could be merged.)

What 19th Century novelist, poet, and essayist is venerated as a saint in a religion practiced by over 3 millon people?

During the 16th century, an artist known for his unique frescoes in and around a certain European city, required a young lady to be the inspiration for his 'Madonna'. As legend would have it, what did this lady present to him in appreciation which, today, is sold world-wide and is considered a major industry for that particular area?
