Okay I did a little more research and the correct spelling is Sayyid (for sons) and Sayyida (for daughters). From Wikipedia:
Sayyid (ÓíÏ) (plural Saadah) is an honorific title often given to males accepted as descendants of the Islamic prophet Muhammad through his grandsons, Hassan and Husayn, who were the sons of his daughter Fatima Zahra and his cousin and son-in-law Ali ibn Abi Talib.
Daughters of male sayyids are given the titles Sayyida, Alawiyah, Syarifah or Sharifah. Children of sayyidas are not considered sayyids. Sayyids must be able to demonstrate descent through males alone, without female links.

O.K. freereign that seems indeed to be a most complete answer. I also read somewhere that the Moroccon form Sidi
(as in Sidi Ben Abbes)is derived from Sayidd. High time we all learned some Oriental terms.
