A few years before the introduction of the current AB55 CDE patterned UK system, the number 666 was banned from new issue. This was not because of any diabolic or such connection. Someone (to whom the expression 'get a life' probably should have been said) had worked out that vehicles carrying that number were more likely to be involved in accidents than the carriers of any other number. Other than that, in terms of real significance, I agree with tragic. Numerology is what you make of it, and can be used to prove almost anything.

In the New Testament, Revelations calls 666 a human number for the representation of the "Beast," or devil in the vernacular.
664 is the bloke next door.
If you have no belief in Christianity, then 666 is the number after 665 and the number before 667.

From the King James Bible:
"Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."

many have read it in the bible or even heard of it from various sources, but very few know where it actually comes from or why the book of Revelation speaks about this number with such negative connotations.
