"Tale of the tape" is a common expression that generally descibes a statistical comparison between two or more things.
The term often is used in sports to compare, for example, the measurements of boxers (height, weight, reach, biceps, and so forth). A typical example can be found at the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
The term is also widely used in newspapers, magazines and other media to describe a comparison of two opponents, such as political foes. Such comparisons may be statistical in nature, but may also include other kinds of facts, such as tastes in music, favorite movies, notable quotes, etc.
