    In Japan there were many swords. In particular, there were a set of three: a large one, a medium size one, and a small one. I know the names of the large and small: a katana and a tanto. What is the name of the medium sized sword? I know it starts with a W.

    		The wakizashi (Ã|²î:¤ï¤­¤¶¤·, wakizashi?) (meaning "side arm") is a traditional Japanese sword with a sh¨­t¨­ blade between 30 and 60 cm (12 and 24 inches), with an average of 50 cm (20 inches). It is similar to but shorter than a katana, and sometimes longer than the kodachi ("small sword"). The wakizashi was usually worn together with the katana by the samurai or swordsmen of feudal Japan. When worn together the pair of swords were called daish¨­, which translates literally as "large and small". The katana was often called the sword or the long sword and the wakizashi the companion sword.

    		The katana is only so called when carried with the cutting edge upward. If the cutting edge faces downward, it is properly called a tachi (to the best of my knowledge).
