Opium, codeine, Morphine, Heroine, Darvocet, Percocet, Oxycontin, Demerol, Vicodin, to name a few, are all derived from the sedative plant the Opium Poppy. (pretty flower!)

I would say that the Writers or Directors point was geared toward the Opium craze that stifled America and the World for a time there in the mid 1800's to early 1900's.
