In days of old when executions were the chopping off of peoples' heads, how were the aristocrats treated differently than the commoners?

Normally commoners were hanged and the chopping off of peoples heads was reserved for aristocracy.

The aristocrats were allowed to set up their hair, so that it wouldn't be chopped off.

Well, I suppose you could be referring to the "privilege" of decapitation by sword instead of axe. Anne Boleyn was famously given this grace, via an expensive executioner imported from France, but many other royals and aristocrats were not.
