    This could be the 'Doner Kebab' which in my neck of the woods is called a 'souvlaki'.

    Don't understand in what sense you mean that. Technically speaking a "word" is a sound or combination of sounds (or its representation in writing or printing) that symbolizes and communicates a meaning (consisting of a single morpheme or of a combination of morphemes).
    Within the terms of that definition döner kebab and brochette are different "words" referring to a similar meaning. In terms of de Saussure same signified but different signifiers.
    Or did I misunderstand something?
