Etymologists don't always agree. What apple's name has been explained as referring to royalty by some, but to freckled frogs by others?

Reinette apples
There are various opinions on the origin of the name 'reinette'.
The most likely derivation is from the word Renatus meaning renewed or reproduced. A reinette is, therefore, a grafted apple as opposed to a seed grown apple.
Some people claim that the apples are named after a 'Rainette' which is a type of frog, because reinette apples are always spotted with russet freckles, like the frog's belly.
At first sight the word appears to have a French origin, and it has been translated as 'Little Queen', though there is no such definition in any French dictionary.
Reinette de Canada is probably the best-known reinette apple.
