Dunkin Donuts sells "munchkins", which are "donut holes". We're having a bit of a family dispute here -- are the munchkins really made out of the cut-out holes of donuts, or are they produced entirely independently?

In 1972, Dunkin' Donuts started to sell Munchkins, miniature ball-shaped "doughnut holes" individually bought in boxes of 25 or 50. Usually, in every Dunkin' Donuts shop, they would have the flavors Plain, Jelly-Filled, Chocolate Glazed, Cinnamon, Powdered, and Glazed Cake. Others would have another type, such as Sprinkled, Apple, or Bavarian Kreme. In 2001, the franchise sold over 700 million Munchkins. Munchkins are likely named after the dwarf-sized characters that appeared in the classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.

I didn't find anything on the site stating they are made from the donut holes but that's what I've always heard too...this deserves further research...if I find anything I'll post it!

Ya know, after reading that again a little more slowly, I'd say that yes, they are made from the donut holes, or maybe not, I dunno! It says miniature ball-shaped "doughnut holes."

Its hard to say because their jelly filled donuts don't have holes.

I would say no because they are spherical and the whole on the inside of a doughnut is curved too. I dont have much of an idea though. I could be way wrong.

they are made independently. if you attempt to stick a munchkin into a donut, it doesn't fit. i watched that show unwrapped and it talked about it.

They may be made independently but even if they aren't, they wouldn't fit after being made anyway...they (donuts & Munchkins) will expand while being cooked...so no matter who makes em there's no way the cooked munchkin will fit inside the whole in the donut!

why is there the assumption that a hole is cut out of a doughnut in the first place. Most if not all commercially made doughnuts are extruded so there is no cut-out doughnut hole in the first place. In a business with tight margins doughnut holes can be the difference between high profits or loss.
